My Painting Trip in Ruins
Actually it was a really great trip - I was painting ruins. Last October, I took a painting trip to Greece with my son, Luke, and fellow artist, John Phillip Osborne. We spent most of our time in Athens painting the Acropolis, Parthenon and the Ancient Agora Market. We visited Hosios Loukas (the historic monastery in Boeotia, Greece) and painted at the Oracle of Delphi. We took a side trip to Santorini and
painted there for several days. It was a memorable trip! I'll be featuring my finished works in an exhibition at Latour Restaurant in Ridgewood, NJ. You are cordially invited to attend the artist's reception and sale on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 12 pm - 2:30 pm. Come and enjoy some champagne and hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef Michael Latour and bring a friend! Latour - A French American Grill is located at 6 East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ
07450. Here's a sampling of some of my watercolors that I've completed so far with a brief description of each.

“The Temple of Hephaistos”
10" x 14" Original Watercolor by Joel Popadics Located at the east end of the ancient Greek Agora Market in Athens, Greece is the Temple of Hephaistos. The temple is named after and dedicated to the blacksmith god, Hephaistos. Construction was completed around 415 BC. Its columns are in the simple Doric style.
It’s half the size of the Parthenon and took about 35 years to construct. This temple is one of the better-preserved buildings from antiquity and sits atop a small hill in a grove of olive trees.
"Along the Ancient Sacred Way, Delphi"
|
14" x 20" Original Watercolor by Joel Popadics The ancient Greek god, Zeus, released two eagles from different corners of the Earth and they meet here in Delphi. He therefore determined that Delphi is the center of the world. Now imagine it's 400 BC and you're part of a procession along the Sacred Way to
Apollo's Temple. Perhaps you're a king or a commoner and you pass the Athenian Treasury, pictured in my painting. On this day you're hopeful that you will be able to hear the Pythia's oracle. The Pythia is the temple virgin who breathes in volcanic fumes from inside the temple; she goes into a trance and utters a gibberish prediction. Then you learn your fate as the oracle is interpreted to you by a priest. $3,300
14" x 20" Original Watercolor by Joel Popadics During the 12th & 13th centuries windmills were first introduced to the Greek Cyclades Islands. Since then, over 600 windmills were constructed to grind grain for bread. They were situated along the coast to take full advantage of the wind. The straw covered
roofs rotate according to the direction of the wind. Today these windmills have been repurposed and are used mainly for tourist’s lodging. $3,300
“Oia, Overlooking over the Caldera”
10" x 14" Original Watercolor by Joel Popadics Oia is a traditional village located in Santorini, Greece. It’s part of the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. Santorini’s crescent shape was created by a volcanic eruption that occurred over 4,000 years ago. Oia is perched high above the caldera overlooking the
sea. Visitors enjoy amazing sunsets from its whitewashed Cycladic hotels and apartments. If you go, be on the lookout for Santorinian vampires (or vrikolakas in Greek) which legend says inhabit the island. $1,700

I'm a foodie; I love to cook, eat and talk about cooking and eating. In fact, I've been told that my classes are really a food class where we paint...lol. Recently, a student got me into cooking "sous vide" and I've been raving about it ever since. I purchased the Anova brand sous vide which is pictured. Click here to watch a video from Chef Steps and learn how to sous vide a perfect medium rare ribeye
steak.
